The house felt too big, the silence amplifying every creak and groan. I couldn't shake the feeling of unease. I kept checking the door, as though I expected someone to burst in, or maybe sneak out. My breath came in shallow bursts.

He'd been acting distant, remote. He’d disappear for hours on end, claiming work commitments, but I saw the way he'd clutch his phone to his chest when he thought I wasn't looking. I hated the feeling growing inside of me, a dark seed of doubt, which only seemed to grow stronger. I opened the wine, needing something to calm my jittery nerves.
